Science comes from curiosity about the world around us and how it works. It provides a framework and method by which we can explore and understand the universe. Evidence based enquiry is at the centre of the scientific method and this central core brings together the three main disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The Chemistry course offers trainees’ the chance to inspire this curiosity in the next generation, teaching both the knowledge and skills that combine to make Chemistry such a challenging and exciting subject. Trainees will have the opportunity to develop methods of teaching in all branches of science, will learn how to run effective and safe practical work and develop teaching beyond the classroom.

Trainees will be trained to teach all three sciences across the 11-16 range and specialise in Chemistry so that it can be developed in more depth - including at post 16. It is inevitable that some aspects of the subject will require further development in skills and knowledge but that will be addressed as part of the training plan throughout the year.

Entry Requirements

To be accepted onto the course you will need: 

  • a degree in Chemistry or a related Science
  • advanced level qualifications, or equivalent experience, in the Science strand you wish to teach. 
  • GCSE grade C or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
  • have passed the QTS skills in English and Maths by 1st September 2017.
  • the ability to read effectively and communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written standard English.
  • a good state of physical and mental fitness
  • confirmation that you have not been excluded from teaching nor from working with children, nor have been registered with the Criminal Records Bureau as unfit for working with children or young persons.
  • The suitable personal and intellectual qualities required for teaching in secondary schools. 

It is beneficial that you also have:  

  • experience of working with secondary-age children.
  • recent experience of your subject in a secondary school.
  • a competent level of ICT skills.

 It is desirable to have passed the QTS skills tests prior to interview. However, if this is not the case there is an expectation the tests are completed as soon as possible after an offer has been made.

 

 

Course Details

The course structure for most students will consist of:

  • A main placement in a secondary school.
  • A shorter second placement in another partnership secondary school.
  • Gaining experience of teaching within the Primary sector.
  • Experiencing SEND teaching at Brackenfield School.

Throughout the year students will:

  • Have full access to The University of Nottingham services.
  • Enjoy full student entitlement of The University of Nottingham, including use of the library, on-line support and SU membership.
